The City of Norfolk has hired Virginia Beach’s former deputy city manager as a consultant, according to a release.

Doug Smith left his post as deputy city manager in Virginia Beach earlier this month to launch his own consulting firm, The Doug Smith Group. Smith’s replacement, Ron Williams, is currently the deputy city manager in Norfolk, the City of Virginia Beach announced Wednesday. Williams is slated to start Nov. 7.

According to a release, which was posted on Norfolk’s website Sept. 27, Norfolk has retained Smith for consulting on economic development and infrastructure, public-private partnerships and business development strategies.

Smith was not available for comment before publication.

Norfolk City Manager Marcus D. Jones was also unavailable for comment before deadline.

Previously, Smith has served as a councilman in Portsmouth, as deputy city manager in Virginia Beach and Portsmouth, and as president and CEO of Kaufman & Canoles Consulting LLC.
