Dedicated and loving wife, mother and Mamaw, Helen E. Mills, 69, went to be with the Lord Sept. 15, 2016, with her family by her side.

Helen was the daughter of Seywright and Narcie Whitmore and was born on Dec. 27, 1946. She was raised in Chesapeake, Va. and later moved to Tennessee with her family. Soon after, she met her soul mate, Leroy H. Mills Sr., a musician whom she adored.

She worked as a cashier at Food Lion at Southern Shopping Center in Norfolk for more thanĀ 15 years and was loved by all who knew her. She worked tirelessly to tend to friends and family and asked for nothing in return.

She suffered the loss of two adult children, Ricky Whitmore and Steven D. Mills, and survived ovarian cancer. She was a strong woman, however, after losing Leroy to cancer in 2011, she was not the same. Though she loved her children and grandchildren dearly, she was broken-hearted without him. As we come to terms with this loss, we can move forward knowing that she is with the Lord and finally back in the arms of her beloved Leroy for all of eternity.

Left to cherish her memory are her mother, Narcie Whitmore; her two loving daughters, Margaret E. Smith and Helen V. Mills; and her four precious grandchildren, Priscilla L. Smith, Savannah M. Mills, Cailee S. Smith and Heaven L. Hewitt; as well as many other loving family members and friends.

A celebration of her life will be on Friday, Sept. 23, 2016, at 3 p.m. at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, 8464 Tidewater Dr., Norfolk.
