Captain Ralph A. Preston Jr., 86, passed away on Sept. 8, 2016
He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Viola Sharpe Preston. He is survived by two daughters, Valerie E. Preston of Virginia Beach, Va. and Vanessa D. Scaramucich and her husband John of Eatontown, N.J., in addition to a host of close family members around the country.
Captain Preston enlisted in the Marine Corps at the age of 17 after graduating from Jesuit High School in New Orleans, La. He served in the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He loved the corps and his country, and served a total of 30 years.
After military retirement he had a second career as a highly skilled service director in the automotive industry for many years. He was also a former president of the Fleet Reserve Chapter 99, and an active member of the 9th Virginia Civil War Reenactment group. Additionally he was a docent of the Norfolk Virginia Zoo, as well as the Chrysler Museum and the Nauticus museum on board the USS Wisconsin.
A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated on Thursday, Sept. 15, 2016, at 4:30 p.m. at St. Matthew Catholic Church. The burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery with full honors at a later date.
Ralph will continue to live through the love and many cherished memories we have of him. All who knew him respected and admired his spirit and strength. Memorials in lieu of flowers may be made to the Disabled Veterans Association. Semper Fi.
