Cato George Bennett Jr., who was lovingly known by his friends as “Buddy,” passed away on Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2016 in a local hospital. He was 79.

Born in Norfolk, he was the son of the late Rhea Mary Hinkleman Bennett and Cato George Bennett Sr. He was also preceded in death by a very special cousin that he considered a sister, Katherine Lawrence Lille.

Cato graduated from Norview High School and the Norfolk Division of the College of William and Mary, now Old Dominion University. He later served in the U.S. Army and the Air National Guard. He worked and retired as a financial adviser and stockbroker for Merrill Lynch and PaineWebber. After his retirement, he ran his family’s business at Bennett Group LLC.

Left to cherish his memory are: his son, Anthony “Tony” Bennett of Norfolk; a sister, George C. Anjal of Norfolk; a brother, Keith W. Bennett and his wife, Therese of Summerville, S.C.; and his former wife and friend, Jean Bennett of South Carolina; and numerous cousins.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 13th in the Norfolk Chapel of H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, 1501 Colonial Ave., Norfolk. The family will receive friends one hour before the service in the chapel. Burial will follow in Rosewood Memorial Park with military honors.
