Leroy Elliott Samuels, 96, founder of Southern Loan Office

Leroy Elliott Samuels, 96, passed away on Sept. 7, 2016 in his home.

He was a native and lifelong resident of Norfolk. He was the son of the late Harry and Emma Binder Samuels. He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Josephine Masserman Samuels of Norfolk, his daughter Ellen S. Ruben of Virginia Beach, sons Andrew C. Samuels of Norfolk and Charles J. Samuels (Jacqueline) of Lake Ridge, Va., his grandson Kevin Ruben and nieces and nephews.

Leroy began working at the age of 14 during the Depression and graduated from Maury High School. He later founded Southern Loan Office, which he owned and operated for 35 years. He was a founding member of Temple Israel and Past President of Brith Sholom Center. He had a vibrant charismatic personality and loved his family, as well as playing golf and cards with his friends.

The family would like to thank his caregivers Doris Medina and Terri Bell for their untiring devotion.

Graveside funeral services will be held in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Norfolk at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 9, 2016. Rabbi Michael Panitz will officiate. The family will accept condolence calls at the home of Josephine Samuels from 3:30-5:00 p.m. on Friday following the funeral and on Sunday from 2:00-4:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or the charity of the donor’s choice.
