Herbert Jackson Jennings Jr., 95, a native of Norfolk, Va., passed away peacefully on Aug. 30, 2016.

Born on July 24, 1921, to the late Herbert and Ellen Jennings, he was predeceased by his loving wife of 44 years, Katherine Jennings, and also longtime companion, Virginia Michael.

He is survived by a son, Thomas Mark Jennings and family. His love for Virginia Michael’s family was unparalleled, and he will be deeply missed.

Herb served in the U.S. Coast Guard as a motor machinist’s mate and then entered the Norfolk Fire Department as an engineer in 1947. He retired after serving 34 years. He was a founding member of Azalea Baptist Church and also a member of the Elizabeth Masonic Lodge No. 34 for 72 years.

Anyone who knew Herb well understood his love for storytelling and revisiting the past history of every inch of Norfolk. He was a true gem who will be missed by all.

Memorial services to celebrate his life will be held at 11 a.m. on Sept. 19, 2016 at Azalea Baptist Church, 3314 E. Little Creek Rd., Norfolk, Va., with a reception to follow.
