A 59-year-old Portsmouth man died during a three-car accident in Isle of Wight County on Wednesday.

Troy Mead Massey, of the 300 block of Chautauqua Avenue, died when his 1996 Ford Crown Victoria was hit by a 2015 Ford F250 driving south on Route 17 at the James River Bridge, Sgt. Michelle Anaya of the Virginia State Police wrote in an email.

The crash, which happened around 4:06 p.m., caused Massey’s car to catch fire and become fully engulfed in flames. Massey’s car hit a 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix driving in front of it, Anaya wrote.

The Ford driver, Charles Mitchell Jr., was charged with reckless driving. Alcohol wasn’t a factor in the crash.
