Richard “Dick” Blessington, 88, passed away Thursday, Aug. 25, 2016. He was born in the Bronx, N.Y., to the late George and Mary Blessington. He is also preceded in death by his sister, Mary Ellen.

Dick proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. He graduated from Fordham Prep and Fordham University. Dick was a devoted member of St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church for more than 40 years and sang with the Virginia Beach Chorale. Dick was an avid golfer and enjoyed attending the Masters Tournament annually. He was also a fan of New York sports teams, especially the New York Giants. He also volunteered at the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center for more than 20 years and played Santa, bringing smiles to children every Christmas, for 50 years.

Dick is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Eileen Marie Blessington; daughters, Kathleen Heslin and husband Jay, Nancy Johnston and Ellen Knepper and husband Don; sons, Rich Blessington and wife Carole and Kevin Blessington; 12 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brother, Jack Blessington; sister, Julie Egan; along with extended family and friends.

The family will receive friends at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Bayside Chapel from 7-8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2016. A funeral Mass will take place at St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 31, 2016 with interment following at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens.
