Jacquelyn Tarkenton Sessoms, 83, former high school Spanish teacher in Virginia Beach

Jacquelyn Tarkenton Sessoms, 83, of Virginia Beach, Va., passed away July 28th, 2016.

She was born Dec. 31,, 1932, in Clarksville, Va., to the late Carlos McClay and Frances Ward Tarkenton. Her husband, Whitt Gurley Sessoms Jr., also preceded her in death.

She attended Wake Forest University, where she was a majorette, a member of the Young Woman’s Auxiliary and Sigma Pi Alpha. She graduated with a B.A, received her master’s degree at the College of William & Mary and attended George Washington University for postgraduate work. Jackie taught Spanish at various high schools in Virginia Beach and, more recently, worked as a realtor.

Jackie was involved in various organizations, including the Sea Sprite Kings Daughter Circle and the Virginia Beach Princess Anne Junior Woman’s Club. She served as president of the Christian Woman’s Club in Virginia Beach, and was a member of Princess Anne Country Club and the Virginia Beach Community Chapel. She also enjoyed teaching Sunday school, tennis, reading, playing piano, swimming and spending time with her grandchildren and pets. She was an excellent dancer who participated in exhibitions and the Cabaret Follies.

Jackie was quick-witted, funny and loved a good laugh. She loved the Lord and lived her life serving her church and community. She will be so missed by her family and friends.

She is survived by her son, Whitt G. Sessoms III, (Terri); daughter, Jacquelyn Sessoms Starkey (Tim); grandchildren, Jennings McClay Sessoms, Jack Ward Sessoms and Neysi Enrique Gomez; and Aunt Willie Sessoms, Barbara Sessoms Brunner, William Douglas Sessoms Jr. and Aunt Audrey Tarkenton Harrell.

The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 4, 2016, at H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, 2002 Laskin Road, Virginia Beach, Va. A memorial service, led by the Rev. Michael Simone, will be at noon Friday, Aug. 5, at Spring Branch Community Church. A reception will follow the service.

Burial will be private in Eastern Shore Chapel Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to for a memorial fountain to be placed in the garden to be enjoyed by future patients and families at Sentara Hospice House, 3760 Sentara Way, Virginia Beach, VA 23452.
