John Perry Sumner Jr., 81, served in Naval Reserve and Chesapeake Police Auxiliary

John Perry Sumner Jr., 81, died July 27, 2016.

Joh, who was born in Portsmouth, Va., served in the U.S. Naval Reserve and the Chesapeake Police Auxiliary. He was a member of the Police Association, the Berkley Masonic Lodge and the Khedive Shrine Temple, where he was a member of the Provost.

Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 60 years, Helen Smith Sumner; children, Lynn Sumner (Cindy), John P. Sumner III (Arlene), Tony Sumner (Trish) and Allen Sumner (Sonya), all of Chesapeake, Va.; brother, Carlton Sumner of Texas; 14 grandchildren, Carrie Sumner, Christy Parker (Chad), Maggie Nipper (Blake), April Sumner, Joni Mae Sumner, Nikki Allen Sumner Jr., Kelly Sumner, Riley Sumner, T.J. Sumner, Kevin Sumner and Kimberly Sumner, all of Chesapeake, Va.; Meghan Justice (Nathaniel) and Jennifer Blake of Hampton,Va., and Nikki Lascara (Michael) of Arizona; 15 great-grandchildren, Elijah, Blake, Ethan, Eliana and Aidan Parker, Lola Sumner, Tyler, Trevor and Annlene Nipper, Aubree Thomas, Karleigh, Shealyn and Julian Justice, Isabella Monica, Harper Wright and Willow Hefflefinger; and a host of nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Aug 1, 2016, at Altmeyer Funeral Home, 929 Battlefield Blvd. S., Chesapeake, Va. A life celebration service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 2, at the funeral home, with Chaplain Don Karnes officiating.

Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery, with a reception to follow at the Berkley Masonic Lodge, 2216 Old Greenbrier Road, Chesapeake, Va.
