Roberta “Bobbie” Howie, 80, died July 14, 2016.
Born in Oconomowoc, Wis., she was the daughter of the late Clarence A. Seidenspinner and Dorothy Emory Bennalleck. She also was preceded in death by a brother, Gilbert Seidenspinner of Racine, Wis. She was married to Gary Jensen in Racine, Wis., from 1953 until 1964. A second marriage to William Howie in Virginia Beach, Va., from 1986 until his death in 1993, started a new chapter in her life’s story.
Bobbie worked and loved and lived a worthwhile life. Through it all, her independent spirit shone true. Her career included administrative work at Walker Manufacturing and Tenneco Automotive in Racine, Wis. This work continued at St. Mary’s Home for Disabled Children in Norfolk, Va., where she found great joy in working with the children until her retirement. After retirement, volunteer activities included work as a docent at Cape Henry Lighthouse Museum and as a coordinator at Potter’s House.
Bobbie loved tennis, reading, indoor gardening and playing the piano. Until the end, she played the piano at The Gardens of Virginia Beach to the delight of other residents. Most of all she loved the beach, where she made close friendships with her 47th St. Beach Buddies and the dolphins.
Left to cherish her memory are her two children, Brian C. Jensen (Barb) of Two Rivers, Wis., and Brenda A. Estes (Bill) of Norfolk, Va; two grandchildren, Jamie (Jacob) Parma of Appleton, Wis., and Nicholas (Samantha Jones) Jensen of Bemidji, Minn.; a great-grandson, Beckett Parma of Appleton, Wis.; two nieces, Linda and Karla, and a nephew, Mark, of Racine, Wis.
The family offers thanks to the staff at The Gardens of Virginia Beach and Interim Hospice Care for their care of Bobbie.
A memorial service, led by the Rev. Jim Wood and the Rev. Valena Hoyat, will be at 2 p.m., Thursday, July 21, 2016, at First Presbyterian Church, Norfolk, Va. A reception will follow at the church.
