Maxine McWaters Piland, 92, formerly of Newport News, Portsmouth and Virginia Beach, Va., died at her home in Massachusetts on July 4, 2016, following a brief illness.
Maxine was born in Gadsden, Alabama, on Nov. 24, 1923. As a teenager, she moved to Newport News, Va., with her widowed mother, Myrtie, and her six siblings. She worked as a legal secretary in Newport News and Portsmouth for many years, before moving to Virginia Beach to enjoy retirement at Harbour Gate condominiums, by the Chesapeake Bay.
She delighted in crossword puzzles, fried shrimp and watching the Boston Celtics. Much loved by family, friends and colleagues, she will be deeply missed.
For the past seven years, Maxine had lived in Winchester, Mass., to be near her daughter, Susan Piland, and son-in-law, Ken Gornstein.
In addition to Susan and Ken, Maxine is survived by her oldest brother, Dallas Clifton McWaters, of Virginia Beach, VA; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Leroy Lawrence Piland, and an infant son, Leroy Lawrence Jr.
A visitation and service in celebration of Maxine’s life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 9, 2016, at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Bayside Chapel, 1457 Independence Blvd., Virginia Beach, Va.
