The Virginia High School League 2016 Group 6A all-state softball team has been selected, and a First Colonial High School senior has been named Player of the Year.

Third baseman Meaghan Barfield earned POY honors, while Osbourn Park Head Coach Tim Garner was named 6A Coach of the Year after leading his team to the school’s first-ever state softball title. It was Barfield’s second time as the state’s top 6A player; she shared the honor last year.

Fourteen players were selected to the all-state squad, which includes three pitchers, one catcher, four infielders by position, one flex, four outfielders and one utility player. Only first-team all-region selections are eligible for selection to the all-state team.

Each all-state selection committee is comprised of eight softball coaches, representing four each region.

DP-Flex Alexis Rumans, an Ocean Lakes senior, was named to the first team. Second team all-state honors went to outfielder Chloe Fox, an Ocean Lakes rising senior, and utility player Cameron Thompson, a Kellam senior.
