Raymond Russell Rowley, 87, passed away peacefully in his home on Saturday, June 18, 2016. Ray will be remembered for his love of God, his family and his country.
He retired from the U.S. Navy after serving 25 years. He was a member of Kempsville Masonic Lodge No. 196. He was born to the late Ernest and Anna Blanche Rowley on January 30, 1929, in New London, Conn.
He was preceded in death by the love of his life, his wife of 49 years, Joan Rowley; and his sons Michael and Raymond Russell Rowley Jr.; and seven brothers.
He leaves to cherish his memory his children, Susan Rowley (Jim), Lynne Gambill, Donna Tanner and Steven Rowley (Antje); seven grandchildren, Jason Merritt, Gretchen Gammo, Sarah Gambill, Madison Tanner, Chris Self (Kayla) and Jackie Self; 11 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 23, at Rosewood-Kellum Funeral Home, 601 N. Witchduck Road, Virginia Beach. A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 24, at Christ Presbyterian Church, 709 Aragona Blvd., Virginia Beach. Burial will follow in Rosewood Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Christ Presbyterian Church in his memory.
