First Colonial boys soccer kept its season alive Friday with a 2-1 victory in the 6A state semifinals, knocking out Yorktown with a last-minute goal in Fairfax to move on to Saturday’s championship game.
For the second game in a row, senior Ian Roberts scored all of First Colonial’s goals. Last match he had a hat trick to defeat Grassfield in triple overtime in the 6A South final.
Yorktown took an early lead about 20 minutes in by taking advantage of a corner kick. First Colonial shifted its defensive and midfield strategy, allowing Roberts to work with Zach Trafton to break through the Yorktown backs for a short shot fired in from 18 yards out to tie the match in the 32nd minute.
“In the second half, it was probably the first 10 minutes they had better chances,” First Colonial coach Kevin Denson said. “For the last 30 minutes of the game … we were obviously the fitter team and created numerous chances and finally got the goal that broke it.”
Roberts’ second goal hit the back of the net in the 79th minute, narrowly preventing overtime. Jaylen Thompson provided most of the breakaway by maneuvering around four Yorktown players and getting Roberts the ball for the finishing touch.
“That’s what Jaylen always does, he beat three or four people at least, got into the box and then played a great ball over to me,” Roberts said. “ I just had to tap it in. It was almost completely Jaylen.”
Defensively, First Colonial keeper Tommy Dye had four saves and the defenders prevented the possibility of several other chances.
“Our defense played well,” Roberts said. “I don’t know if it was travel or nerves but the first 10-20 minutes our defense was shaky, but the rest of the game they were locked down.”
Just one game remains between First Colonial and a championship trophy. The final against Washington-Lee is set for 5 p.m.
“We are ready, more ready than we’ve ever been,” Roberts said. “The goal since the beginning of the year has been state championship, so we’re here, we’re determined, we’re in pretty good spirits because we just came off a good win, and we’re ready to take on Washington-Lee.”
